Unusual late 17th century primitive oak armchair

A charming provincial oak armchair, English, late 17th century, with unusual original applied arms.

Tall-backed with a shaped crest rail, boarded seat and simple turned front stretcher. The chair shows honest age and use throughout, including old iron strap repairs to the arms — practical, early reinforcements that add great character. A wonderfully honest piece of vernacular furniture with a warm, timeworn surface and a quietly sculptural presence. Solid, stable and full of personality.
