A truly brilliant late 17th century English folk art carved stone double sided memento mori, one side baring the familiar image of a skull and crossed bones, the other side featuring a crossed pick axe and shovel, a less well known memento mori motif of the 17th century that represents the tools of the grave digger, or church sexton. Probably originally the top of a gravestone, with its arched form, it stands and displays wonderfully now on a shelf or other surface. H 17 cm x W 22 cm x D 8 cm (approx)
