An extremely rare and singular large late 17th century German oil painting on canvas, in commemoration of one Martinus de Wette, commission by his grandson Johannes Andreas de Wette and featuring a short poem of his, painted by the artist ‘Adam Eberhard’ in 1697.
The writing roughly translates as follows: “(Upper left) In the year 1612, Martinus de Wette, pastor at Ballenstädt in the county of Mansfeld, in the 80th year of his age and the 50th year of his ministry. (Upper right) Martinus de Wette, reader and friend, keep your eyes pure, your life honest and chaste, avoid all great sins and add virtue to virtue. Johannes Andreas de Wette, grandson. (Centre right, beside crucifix) I desire to know nothing except Christ crucified. (Lower right, beneath crucifix) Christ alone is the life and death of the faithful.
