A rare, large mid 17th century carved oak armorial printing block, featuring a rampant lion with a border of holly leaves. Obviously originally from a very wealthy family, the raised design would be inked and impressed onto paper, producing an armorial bookplate/frontispiece or ownership mark. The panel itself is rather thin and has two layers of later backing beneath it, in order to strengthen it. Really rare thing, recently purchased from an important collection. H 24 cm x W 22 cm
