Late 19th century Krishnanagar clay doll, Indian folk art

£195.00

A wonderful late 19th century Krishnanagar clay doll. These dolls were produced by highly skilled provincial craftsmen in the ancient city of Krishnanagar, in Nadia, West Bengal, by moulding clay around a iron skeletal structure; they quickly gained international attention for their highly realistic appearance and the attention to detail. This one certainly shows its age, the clay having come away in parts, revealing the ironwork beneath, but in my opinion it only adds to the soulful mood of the piece, almost like the figure is disintegrating and fading away before us, but still remaining stoic, with a dignified look on his face as he soldiers on.
